Title: Freelancer RP

This is an idea I have always dreamed of, Freelancer was one of my all-time favourite games, it was an amazing RPG / Sci fi / Action game.
Dug has recently mentioned it, and I decided to create this thread.
I'm not going into any detail, as I havn't seen any accepted ideas yet.

For the story and setting, read the Plot & setting / Characters / Story sections of that page.

I'm suggesting we make Freelancer RP because Freelancer itself has no walking around or proper Freedom. You can visit vendors, bar tenders, talk to people, but those controls are merely a 'point and click' part of the game.

There is a Freelancer online mod which is Rp-based and huge, but it is still the same game and you're still limited to the Freelancer game play (IE: Stuck inside your ship / Point and click interaction.)

Freelancer content is available on garrysmod.org, the Freelancer ships + weapons to be precise.

The game mode doesn't need to be serious, no online applications or anything alike are not required. I'm thinking more of a Cider RP format, where you click on the desired class icon and you become the class, there is a limit to how many people can be that class, etc.

I was more thinking of using freelancer it self for rp, there's plenty of mods out there we can use, if allowed , I think. It's a wonderful game with a lot of potential and I simply love it.

Also, I was thinking of serious roleplay.

Using Freelancer itself for RP, is a good idea, however we would be dominated by the current Discovery Freelancer servers.

I believe it is better if we try with the current players in HGN than some random bunch out there. But it seems only you and I know about freelancer and wish to rp.

Ive tried this with Radek and a couple of others, It gets very empty and boring....
You need a lot of players to get this to work properly.

You have a shitload of NPCs in the game. You do what you want to, as in , be a pirate, mercenary, navy, etc. etc.

Roleplay would be there for players to roleplay with each other when they do run into each other. Other than that until that happens you do whatever you are intending to do.

Isn't too much happening with the NPC's either, except battleships running into Manhattan, creating a very nice light show.

Maybe for you, I enjoy games like freelancer even if I don't play with other players. So... yeah.

I'm talking about the multi-player, Its different then how things work in Single-player.
And who said I don't like playing alone in Freelancer?
I thought the point of this thread was about the Multi-player.

I said I don't mind playing mutliplayer with the NPCs(I put the sentence together wrong). It's still fun for me. But it is also fun to run into other players and roleplay with them.

Also would be fun if we could delete all of the NPCs(stations,fighters etc. etc.) and roleplay from the Solar System aka the humans are making their first big step. We could have some pretty simple transports who would make a station or something, we would run into problems, etc. Many possible scenarios.

Maybe we could try my idea. The more players we get the more we expand aka make more stations, places to visit, jump gates, etc.

Just talking out of experience here.
Freelancer RP is a good idea, but you need players to pull it off.
If you got players, and know how to use FLHook properly, you got yourself a successful server.

Looks amazing, and sounds like a good idea also. would be a lot of passive RP it seems also.

A lot of passive RP is possible in any RP theme, it's just that players prefer whining, instead.
It doesn't have a "look", so I don't really understand your statement about the appearance.

Well if we had a server, we could try it.
If we were to do it my way , things would slowly develop due to player base. Each time more and more players would join freelancer rp, the story would further develop and factions would open which are listed below.

Starting Area: Solar System / Earth

Major Faction: NASA

Story: NASA has finally developed the spaceships they've been working on so long, and has decided to build stations and colonies in the Solar System. They have began to hire pilots all around the globe to participate in their missions for expanding humanities borders. Their plans are to make humans live in those stations and on their colonies, having jobs and families on other planets and stations alike. However due to their expansions some people have decided to go rogue and have become the first space pirates.

Example of Objectives NASA would have in mind. (Depends who would be the leader)

Objective 1: Make a station on Mars which is orbiting it.
Objective 2: Colonize Mars.
Objective 3: Develop Mars and planetary defenses against asteroids.
Objective 4: Develop Jump Gates so long distance jumps are possible.
Objective 5: Develop Hubble further more.
Objective 6: Upgrade station on Moon which was abandoned long ago.
etc. etc.


-After couple of years of NASA building stations and colonies-

Minor Faction (Later on Major Faction, full of pirate clan): Pirates

Story: When nothing was going as planned a group of people or close friends, sometimes couples would have bought space ships, armed them and ventured off to become pirates and deal with all sorts of illegal activity.

Minor Faction: Bounty Hunters / Mercenaries

Story: Some people were just good at hunting others down and they were really skilled pilots who you could trust to get the job done. As piracy expanded and pirate clans were formed. A wanted list was created for those who are doing any sort of illegal activity. There for these men would carry out missions and attempt to hunt down these certain pirates.

Major Faction: United Earth Directorate

Story: After it was proven NASA was merely full of researchers and explorers, Earth finally united to become a space faring race. This Faction dedicated it self to producing weapons, space tactics and becoming an ultimate force in the human occupied space. There for enforcing law on all. Being the ultimate force came with a cost, as some members sold weaponry and ships on the black market. There for their weaponry and ships would soon go against them if they were to engage a pirate clan or bounty hunters gone rouge.


Minor Faction: Miners

Story: After NASA discovered a way to extract minerals in space. This group was formed. It is said they power the economy in human occupied space.

I think you all get my point how this would go on. More players, more factions, more RP, more possibilities.

That's not the Freelancer story although that could work.

In Freelancer there is a civil war between 2 factions the Federation and the Alliance (generic names and they don't ever tell you anything about them, believe they are covered in the game Starlancer) and things get so bad for one of the factions (I want to say the Federation) that they bug out to the star Sirius on these big world ships with entire populations of people on them. There's 5 of those.

800 years later Freelancer happens.

I know it isn't, that's why I'm proposing this, our very own story, as freelancer rp would be slow at start until things would pick up the paste. If we knew how to modify all of this, aka input stations, delete, etc. etc. to follow the story line, that would be great. But I doubt any of us do, so this would be very slow.

EDIT: I've found the Freelancer Tools and there are turtorials in it. but I'm lazy.

I used to play on discovery for a long time, one of my good friends is the leader of the NTF. I think all my ships are gone now though :/

Maybe have 2 or 3 systems at first but limiting is definitely a good idea. The Freelancer world is massive if you only have like 20 people on. Might be ages before they ever find each other.

Not really i was able to host a 20 player game with npc's off my old rig and my net is only 56kbs
