Memory would be a good upgrade for any laptop. Always make sure you have sufficient memory. After that, if you're looking to gain some FPS, invest in a video card. I would try getting those new ones from ATI coming out soon. They have 800 stream processors just like the desktop versions. They are fast little suckers for laptop gaming.

I'm hoping to hold out until Dx11 But I doubt I can. I'm sure RAM & external drives'll cost less than a new card .

You doubt you can hold out w/ a 9600??? I'm holding out with a 6 year old single core processor and an X1650. You can hold out till DX11. Windows 7 comes out this year I believe. If not, very early next year.
