Officers and over are exempt from this, they can use whatever weapon or armor they please.
It is recommended that you stay out of the more heavy fighting since you need to command your men.
Vanguards are not included in this exemption.

Anyone using weapons or armor not assigned to their rank will be dealt with harshly.
If you pillage weapons or armor that are not in your rank you may sell them or trade them for weapons or armor that you can use.
Abuse of unassigned equipment will result in demotion or removal.
