All of the factions will recruit players. If the faction you don't want isn't recruiting, I guarantee you there will be others.
To join a faction, you must first make friends with them. To do this, you can do said work mentioned on "A tip for new players on earning money". After you have done work for them and helped them with raids or defending from raids, they will usually see you as loyal, and if you don't ask them to join, they will ask you. Don't worry if they don't ask you right away, joining a faction takes time.
Most factions you will have to apply for on the forums once you have befriended them. Other minor factions like Mercs, Bandits, Ecologists, Traders, and etc you don't have to apply for. If you want to join said factions, you will have to talk to faction leaders, or people in the faction with flagging rights (It is not advised to simply ask for flags).
Please note when you join a faction you have made a commitment. If you leave the faction or do jobs for rival factions, your character will most likely be prone to a PK (Permanent kill).
A sidenote: You can only be in 1 major faction at a time, but you can be in as many side factions as you want.
Thank you for your time, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and have a good time on the server.

I have been on the forums for a while, I just don't post a lot. I also go on the server for a few hours each day.
And not to be an ass, but that was kind of a strange reply.
Note to the people who don't want to lose all their hard work, and stuff they got from the faction they worked for, Make a application and new character, use that character to join up, makes the mental sh*ts much less harsh.
