My armor is contempt. My shield is disgust. My sword is hatred. In the emperor's name, let none survive.
Terms to Know:
(Adeptus) Astartes - The Space Marines. General term for all of the chapters/any number of marines.
Imperium - Mankind. The largest and last hope of humanity.
Imperial Guard - Basically the space army.
Imperial Space - The Galaxy
Gene-seed - Two glands, one situated in the neck, and the other deep within the chest cavity. These glands are vital to the survival of the Marine's Chapter, as they are a chapter's only source of new implants which create a Marine.
Deep in the Segmentum Obscurus, just within the Gothic Sector of Imperial Space, the Lethe system is one that lacks fortune in many ways. It has been one constantly plagued by the looming presence of The Darker Powers; this presence is an undeniably imposing one that lies a mere four thousand Light years away.
It is called Ocularis Terribus, or the Eye of Terror, and it is a gaping maw into the warp that haunts the entire galactic arm. In the past, Lethe had played host to the founding of the Flame Falcons, during the Cursed 21st Founding. Though foundings in the past had been in locales in more remote locations in the galaxy, no Founding was more 'Cursed' and few were as large as the 21st.
First cursed on this world were the White Consuls, a short-lived descendant of the Ultramarines, it was they who were commanded to watch over the Eye of Terror.
Four-thousand and fourty-nine years later, it the Flame Falcons.
The Flame Falcons Chapter was founded without conflict, as were many chapters on that day, but it is not what happened on the founding day that classifies it as "Cursed". The Flame Falcons, The Minotaurs and The Black Dragons, as well as other chapters of the Astartes, mutated in various ways. Others were just haunted with incessantly poor luck, but we will not speak of those at this time. The Black Dragons were subject to mutations, theirs being a zygote deformation that caused them to grow bony plates all about their bodies. The Flame Falcons, quite uniquely, were bathed in a flame that caused them no harm, making their name serve more true than expected.
Inquisitors maintain the harmony of humanity and restrain the advancement and mutation of the human genome. By definition, "The purpose of the Inquisition is to identify and destroy the myriad of potential threats to the Imperium and humanity." Where this jurisdiction ends cannot be said, but where it begins and what it entails is the human and any other race. Ordo Hereticus is what we speak of today; a sect of the inquisition completely dedicated to the investigation of and the uprooting and weeding out of heresy, mutation, and rogue psykers, in all forms, from humanity.
The poor luck and mutation of the Flame Falcons (and other chapters) served them as prime targets for an Inquisition. The Flame Falcons were eradicated by the Inquisition, and to knowledge, very few survived the slaughter that day.
In the end, the surviving Flame Falcons were declared Exocommunicat Traitorus or, Traitors to the Empire.
Now, years after that, in the year of our Emperor 999.M41, and with the 41st Millenium drawing closed, Chaos has peered its leery eye upon this system again. Rather than orchestrate a corrupted founding, it has merely 'blessed' this world with a new Heresy. Cults to the Dark Gods grow like tainted blisters covered enough with gauze to not be visible. The Corruption seethes and sinks and now, people have begun to feel the energies of Chaos beneath their feet. Subtle fetishes to Slaanesh and Nurgle are glimpsed in the streets of the hive-cities of Lethe II.
It is then that the Imperial Guards, those becoming suspect to the corruption, are given to the Lord Commander <INSERT NAME>. Granted the Macharian Cross during his conquests and born on Terra, <INSERT NAME> has arrived to drive the Lethe system back to Imperial Order and to root out the Chaos before an Inquisition becomes necessary. The poorly trained guard must be whipped into shape by the Lord Commander, and their belligerence against an off-world commander and otherwise solarphobia will be a challenge in itself.
Within the shadows, the forces of Chaos lurk as the four cults bolster themselves. Although every cult claims itself worthy of Lethe's control and completely dominant of the forces that be, the Cults of Nurgle and Tzeentch maintain themselves as the most powerful, with the Slaaneshian cult running up at the current time. Although the Khornate cult rises to its own occasion quite often, it is seemingly easily quelled each time. The plotters and the 'life-givers' will be an inherent challenge for the Imperial Guard as well, as their corruption seeps into the minds and hearts of the Imperial populous. The two cults, commanded by the self-declared, and highly mutated Mind-Seer of Tzeentch <NAME>, and the Lord Benedictor of the Greatfather <NAME>, (Greatfather meaning Nurgle) conflict with one-another annually and serve their God's alignment with fervor.
Now it is you who enter the Lethe system, and settle here, on Lethe II, seeking to make your fortune, fill your belly, or whatever your own personal goal may be. Perhaps you want to start a family. Mayhaps you wan
t to become Lord Solar. Whatever your cause or your intentions, Chaos is here, and it might be here to stay.
