In the next update it is rumored that laterns will be added...laterns will be a permanent source of light, where as torches will flicker out and need to be re-lit. however, all torches that are already created will become lanterns, SO STOCK UP ON AS MANY TORCHES AS POSSIBLE!!!

yes, but its been brought back up since the last update, and i dont think the idea is gonna go away....

It's been brought back up after every update since Halloween of last year, Notch keeps saying it's a really bad idea.
meh, at any rate, im still gonna prepare....
it's kinda like Y2K and now the 2012 scare, every time one comes to pass and nothing happens someone starts making a big deal out of the next thing they can find which causes certain areas of the market to swell creating an increase in profit for some people.... or a similar situations in this case....
but what the hell, you only get a chance to make 500 lanterns in a quarter of a second once right?
IIRC Noth said in a blog post that the more he thought about that the worse the idea of non permanent torches seemed. I think that idea isn't being pursued right now.

yeah I remember hearing about rain and lightning in the future, I also heard that when lightning strikes sand it will create glass and when it strikes stone it will create a gold vein... but who knows that may be a rumor
The glass and gold veins sounds unlikely... I know other people have said it might light tree's on fire, but even that sounds like a bad idea. I mean, on lightning strike, and boom, you have a forest fire...

The Lanterns were an idea rumored to be in the halloween update. But never got through. I thought lanterns woulld make it able to move around and light would follow but guess I was wrong thats just a bad Idea to make torches temporary and not permanent.
