I feel like the answer should be obvious to me yet I still don't seem to be able to find it...
So I wanted to know why exactly do we have auths on the server? I mean it can't be to stop certain people from getting overpowered since the point of the server is roleplay, so what is the reason? All I know is that the only reason people want good gear, at least for myself, is so we don't have to deal with mobs in the game when were trying to roleplay because they can be a real pain in the ass when you can't just kill them in one fell swoop.
Help for hire! Seriously ask me for help, I need things to do.

People can't just go running around with angel wings and hallowed armor. If your character just starts out as some overpowering entity, then there's no growth for your character or its role play. From your post, it sounds like you consider OP and role play to be one in the same concept, when really, they're pretty interchangeable. Some people like to play a brave warrior battling a horde of soul eaters, which, with all of the high end equipment, can hardly be considered a legitimate challenge. The mobs are inconvenient to you. Not to everyone who uses their environment as well as their equipment to their advantage, role play wise.

To answer your question to the best of my knowledge, auths serve a purpose mostly for mods to keep track of who has what, making sure no one is breaking rules, but can also set limits so we DON'T have newbies coming in saying "lol im new hero and u all worship me nao." with their rainbow pimp gear.

I sense the hidden purpose of this thread is to justify your strike for bringing in an item without an auth, and you want to gripe about the rules that you don't wish to abide by. Tough luck, but the rest of us seem fine.

Your post was helpful except for this part since that is not true. Also I find op and roleplay two very different things because roleplay has nothing to do with what you have in game. Some want to take the time and effort to make the game bend to their roleplay as much as possible and others just want to have hallow gear and weapons so they can roleplay without bothersome mobs. Personally auths to keep track of who has what and to stop cheaters is fine, but I find that the reason of "Lol I'm a god because I have awesome gear now!?" gets used way to much. If they're going to be a dumbass about roleplaying you could easily give them critic or boot them out.

I'm a much more text based player so things like a pack of zombies or slimes constantly annoying you when you're trying to type gets rather annoying.

The reason why that argument gets used so much is due to it's validity, it is one of the primary reasons behind auths. We use auths to make it so that each character only has clothes which reflect whom they are, if a brand new guy who is a toilet scrubber in the steel dragons has hallowed armor it is very immersion breaking. Also people do clearly consider their gear to be a reflection of how good/high up their character is either in an obvious way or sub-consciously. As well as that auths provide rewards for long term, law abiding players whom have ALSO PROVIDED SOMETHING OF VALUE TO THE SERVER.

I stress this statement (and this is aimed at everyone) as in my opinion it is all fine saying "I've been here for a year" but using that to justify auths is completely ridiculous as if you have contributed nothing, haven't RPed much when you were on before and have just not played Terraria in ten months and expect to come back and treated as a god despite doing nothing positive to contribute to the server. Sorry about that I just wanted to get that off my chest in case anybody does do that.

Finally I wish to congratulate VonXeno for his explanation, he has been awarded 3 internets!

That's fine and all, but not everyone strictly follows text when role playing, as they have actual avatars to perform certain actions. I figure it would make sense to use said avatars to represent what your trying to do. Although, since Terraria is mostly just swing, stab, and mine, I can see how it would be difficult. But that's why we have /me.

The monsters I feel have their own roles as well, save those god damn slimes. Many players find it beneficial to interact with them.

I aim to please.
I am not what I think I am, and I am not what you think I am. I am what I think you think I am.

This feels like a very explaining conversation. I might have been here for a very long time, but personally other then roleplaying a lot I don't have much to show for. I helped build a couple things in the past, but haven't really done that much to contribute to the server. I still have a lot to learn from this server, since I've never really played that much on a game focused roleplay server.

I can see giving auths for weapons because those you can plainly see, but for gear you can wear stuff over it, which for people can become a easy way to have hallow armor without anyone knowing. Though I find that a bit dishonest and stupid because as soon as you enter pvp it would be obvious you're wearing high class armor.

At first I guess I was kind of angry because it seemed even new players and freshbys were getting auths like a snap of the finger, but when I think about it know I don't really get angry because I realize that those people just have a lot more initiative and thus deserve the gear they are awarded.

this whole conversation has reminded me. DO NOT give newbies overpowered items.

I started the whole game simply, no armor, and default items.

The only thing i really got as a newbie was a grappling hook form Isaki, which i am eternally grateful to.

I'm just waiting to mess up your day. Honest.

i know what you mean james i started with nothing and made everything i had except for the staring iron armor and that i did a mission for.

My very first character never really got aid since I started before people actually played often on the server so I was usually helping others.

James, you forgot me and my stockpile of BoG's. Those were so damn easy to farm back then XD I swear I musta given out 10. And Ael hated that. Blair too. Oh well.

@Blair I don't do it anymore though.
