Kira's Karbines Firearms Guide
By Kira Alekhin, manager of Kira's Karbines Arms Dealership
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
People come through my shop all the time wanting to buy and sell all sorts of crazy things. Guns, ammo, ballistics, energy-based, shotguns, and rifles, you name it. Some people aren't sure what they want exactly, so they hesitate when buying guns or ammo. Let me tell you right now, if you have no guns already, never hesitate to buy something. You're better having a 9mm pistol now than a million caps to buy a Fatman later. Those caps won't stop a bullet, or better yet send one back at the asshole shooting you. Still, what kind of money do you got? What kind of gun do you need? Let me tell you in depth the pros and cons of all the weapons I commonly trade. For my own list, I'll put them down from cheapest to most expensive.
Common 9mm
TYPE: Pistol
AMMO: 9mm
POWER: Low
RANGE: Short
MAG CAP: 12
DESCRIPTION: Immediately before the Great War, 9mm pistols were less common than their 10mm counterparts. 9mm where more common in southern states, like Colorado, Kentucky, and Utah, while 10mm was more favored by the Federal government and the citizens of Northern California. None the less, the 9mm pistol is one of the most common guns to be found in the New England Wastes as well, possibly due to the fact that its low caliber made it easier to obtain in a location that, pre-war, was very strict on the handling of firearms. It's very cheap to buy, very easy to find ammunition, and it's very reliable. You hardly need any firearm experience to handle it effectively considering its simple build and lightweight design.
PROS:
- Cheap
- Easy to find ammo
- Effective
CONS:
- Low stopping power
- Defeated by most armor
- Short range
N99 10mm
TYPE: Military Pistol
AMMO: 10mm
POWER: Low
RANGE: Short
MAG CAP: 12
DESCRIPTION: After the phase out of the N80 in 2051, the N99 sidearm became standard issue military gear. The N99 was known for its ability to survive in the harshest of conditions, as well as the weapon's reliability be restored to working condition despite extended periods exposed to hard elements and without maintenance. The N99 proved to stand up to its claims during and after the war, and is therefore one of the most common weapons found used in the wasteland. While many civilian weapons were ruined beyond use in the extreme conditions following the war, the N99 is commonly able to be easily restored to working order by anyone with even the most basic knowledge of firearm mechanics. The Chinese also created a similar, slightly heavier knock-off of the N99, but don't be fooled. They might take the same ammunition, but the poorly built barrels on the Chinese pistols reduces accuracy and muzzle velocity.
PROS:
- Extreme reliability
- Stronger than 9mm counterparts
- Very common
CONS:
- Slightly more expensive than 9mm
- Defeated by mildly robust armor
.308 Hunting Rifle
TYPE: Rifle
AMMO: .308 Winchester
POWER: Medium
RANGE: Short to Medium
MAG CAP: 5
DESCRIPTION: The .308 Winchester is a rifle round is the commercial version of the military 7.62x51mm NATO centerfire cartridge. The .308 Winchester was introduced in 1952, two years prior to the NATO adoption of the 7.62x51mm NATO T65. Winchester (a subsidiary of Olin Corporation) branded the cartridge and introduced it to the commercial hunting market as the .308 Winchester. The .308 Winchester round its self however is so widely used in hunting rifles found in the wasteland today that it is impossible to simply name off just one rifle that carries it. Massachusetts commonly has pump-action .308 rifles like the one in the picture, but I know they also come in lever-action. Back in New England, bolt-action .308 rifles were most common. It varies with the region. However, most of these weapons are often held together with electric wire, twine, and duct tape. They're not entirely that reliable. However, this weapon is incredibly common and very cheaply priced, making it a popular weapon among armature scavengers and body guards.
PROS:
- Accurate
- Good range
- Built in flashlight attachment
- Cheapest rifle available
CONS:
- Frequently jams (( This is due to a programming bug in-game ))
- Difficult to reload (( Same problem. More bugs. ))
- Pump/Lever/Bolt action only
Combat Shotgun
TYPE: Semi-Automatic Assault Shotgun
AMMO: 12-Gauge Shells
POWER: Varies with range
RANGE: CQB
MAG CAP: 12
DESCRIPTION: This model of combat shotgun was deployed as a close assault fire team's primary weapon (supplemented with explosives, an N99 pistol, and a power fist) during the Anchorage Reclamation, and many working units have been scavenged by raiders and slavers across the American wasteland. This particular shotgun is vastly superior to others because the combat shotgun combines a large magazine with devastating close-range damage as well as a higher firing rate and lower recoil compared to its lesser counterpart the SPAS-12. Also unlike most shotguns, the Combat Shotgun is reloaded with an external magazine, similar to an assault rifle, where as most shotguns utilize built-in tube magazines. The downside to this shotgun however is it has the shortest barrel out of any model, giving it the worst spread of fire--making it effective only at close quarters combat. However, because of its semi-automatic fire and high capacity magazine, it is still very deadly. In the past these shotguns were less common than others in the wastes, but as of lately they have dropped substantially in price. Suppliers of various arms dealers, including those who supply Kira's Karbines, have raided military bases where these shotguns were stored in large volumes. As a result, they are now open to the market for less than half their old prices.
PROS:
- Cheapest shotgun sold at Kira's Karbines
- Superb close-quarters weapon
- High rate of fire
- High cap magazine
- External magazine allows drastically faster reload time compared to most shotguns
CONS:
- Lowest accuracy of all shotguns, good for only close-range
- Power and accuracy decreases with range
.44 Colt Anaconda
TYPE: .44 Caliber Revolver
AMMO: .44 Magnum
POWER: High
RANGE: CQB
MAG CAP: 6
DESCRIPTION: Introduced in 1990, the Colt Anaconda is a large frame double-action revolver featuring a full length under-barrel ejection-rod lug and six round cylinder, designed and produced by the Colt's Manufacturing Company. Chambered for the powerful .44 Magnum and .45 Colt centerfire ammunition cartridges, the Anaconda marked the Hartford, Connecticut firm's first foray into the popular large-bore Magnum pistol market. Anaconda revolvers were primarily marketed for sport enthusiast shooters and hunters, as they are too large and unwieldy for law enforcement, self-defense, or concealed-carry. Colt firearms announced the discontinuation of the Anaconda and many other double-action revolver models in October 1999, although made-to-order limited production versions of the gun continued to be available from the Colt custom gun shop until approximately 2003. In a post-apocalypse world, the revolver proved to be an easily manufactured firearm by gunsmiths who copied the Colt Anaconda design for the .44 caliber pistols we see today--but due to how common the 10mm is by comparison, or even the 9mm, revolvers aren't nearly as frequently seen until you get further out west. However, Kira's Karbines has recently imported a large stock of .44 caliber pistols now available to customers. It has been found that the weapon has devastating stopping power, possibly able to kill a man in one or two shots, but the drawback is the extreme inaccuracy of the weapon. Ironically, the bad accuracy and high power has made this a very popular dueling weapon. Combined with a short barrel and high kick, any .44 caliber weapon is very difficult to shoot straight at range. As a result, this weapon is best suited for self-defense. If you get into a bad bar fight, this badass gun is your peace-maker.
PROS:
- Extremely powerful
- Easily concealed
CONS:
- Low ammo cap (6 shells compared to 12 in clip-based pistols)
- Low accuracy
- Costs much more than other pistols (though could be worth it)
Remington 870 Wingmaster Hunting Shotgun
TYPE: Shotgun
AMMO: 12-Gauge Shells
POWER: Varies with range
RANGE: CQB to Short
MAG CAP: 3
DESCRIPTION: The Remington Model 870 is a U.S.-made pump-action shotgun manufactured by Remington Arms Company, Inc. It was widely used by the public for sport shooting, hunting, and self-defense as civilian models. It was also commonly used by law enforcement and military organizations worldwide. The 870 features a bottom-loading, side ejecting receiver, tubular magazine under the barrel, dual action bars, internal hammer, and a bolt which locks into an extension in the barrel. The Wingmaster model only holds three rounds in its magazine, but its long barrel allows for a tighter spread at range--making this shotgun one of the most powerful models in the wasteland. In the past, shotgun ammo was very difficult to find despite how common shotguns were. However, Kira's Karbines and other wasteland arms dealers have learned how to construct shotgun shells. An ammunition that was previously impossible to find is now as common as 10mm rounds thanks to new ammo smiths in the Commonwealth.
PROS:
- High power at close and short range
- Long barrel allows for greater range than other shotguns
- Common weapon
- Very common ammo
CONS:
- The 'Wingmaster' model only hold 3 shells at a time
- Power and accuracy decreases with range
AK-102 Automatic Rifle
TYPE: Assault Rifle
AMMO: 5.56mm
POWER: Medium
RANGE: Short to Medium
MAG CAP: 24
DESCRIPTION: The AK-102 is an assault rifle of the Kalashnikov series which is a shortened version of the AK-101. It is designed for the world export market, using 5.56x45mm NATO cartridges, which was the standard of all NATO armies. The AK-101/102 was marketed at those looking for a weapon that combines the logistical compatibility and familiarity of the 5.56x45 NATO round with the legendary reliability of a Kalashnikov. It was designed with modern and composite materials, including plastics that reduce weight and improve accuracy. Many of the improvements found in the AK-101 and 102 are also present in the AK-103 and the rest of the AK-10X series of rifles, including Chinese variants of the gun such as the T-93. The AK-102 is a selective fire weapon that can be fired in either semi-automatic or fully automatic mode. The disassembly procedure for the AK-102 is identical to that of the AK-74. The AK-102 has an attachment rail installed on the side of the receiver for mounting scopes and other optical sights, which will accept most types of Russian and European AK optics. The AK-102 features AK-74 style muzzle brake attached to the barrel to control muzzle climb, and the AK-102 can be fitted with a variety of accessories, including laser, night vision, and telescopic sights, plus a suppressor and the GP-30 grenade launcher. The AK-102 is commonly mistaken as an AK-47, which is arguably one of the most famous guns in history as well as one of the AK-102's predecessors. Many AK-47's survive to this day, but the AK-102 is a drastic improvement upon its ancestor. When the Chinese invaded the United States, the AK-102 became the standard assault rifle for the People's Liberation Army largely in part due to its comparability with the common 5.56x45 NATO rounds used in American assault rifles. While many of the guns had been bought from Russia before the war started, the Chinese had manufactured and modified most of the rifles for themselves. Historically, China loved to buy Russian technology, then reverse-engineer it for their own use and production. A famous modification of the rifle, dubbed in the Wasteland as the 'Chinese Assault Rifle' (not to be confused with the T-93 commonly found in the Capital Wasteland area) which featured an upgraded barrel that improved muzzle velocity. However, with this modification, the muzzle break cannot be properly attached, which causes the gun to suffer greater recoil, thus reducing accuracy. You can still find the original assault rifle and the Chinese modified assault rifle for roughly the same price throughout the wasteland. One is more accurate, while the other is more powerful. Both weapons are very deadly yet very common these days because the AK-series were (and still are) famous for their extreme durability. A large number have survived despite extreme conditions that would destroy many other military weapons.
PROS:
- Fully-Automatic fire selection
- Semi-Automatic fire selection
- Very common ammunition
- Common weapon
- Medium stopping power
- Armor-piercing bullets
- Good at all combat ranges
- Excellent for militia groups or mercenaries!
CONS:
- Higher-end gun means higher-end prices
- The modified 'Chinese Assault Rifle' is inaccurate despite its stopping power
- Power Armor can sometimes defeat the 5.56 rounds
SPAS-12
TYPE: Semi-Automatic / Pump-Action Shotgun
AMMO: 12-Gauge Shells
POWER: Varies with range
RANGE: CQB to Short
MAG CAP: 9
DESCRIPTION: The SPAS-12 is a combat shotgun that was manufactured by the Italian firearms company Franchi S.p.A. from 1979 to 2000. The SPAS-12 is a dual-mode shotgun, meaning it can be used as a semi-automatic or pump-action firearm. The SPAS-12 has sold well to military and police groups around the world, but the appearance and intended purpose of the weapon eventually led to it being banned from import into the United States, due to a lack of "sporting purpose". Franchi had even named the gun the Sporting Purpose Automatic Shotgun, (rather than Special Purpose) in hopes to allow its import, but to no avail. Like most shotguns, the SPAS-12 is loaded via a tube-magazine which needs to have each individual round loaded in rather than simply popping a magazine into the weapon. The SPAS 12 was designed to function primarily as a semi-automatic firearm, with the pump-action mode used to reliably fire low-pressure ammunition such as tear gas rounds or less-lethal bean bags. Switching between firing modes is done by pressing a button under the foregrip, and sliding the foregrip slightly forwards or backwards until it clicks into position. Early SPAS-12 models featured a lever-type safety, but over time it would begin discharging the firearm when switched on or off. This was eventually recalled by Franchi and replaced by a push-button crossbolt safety. Many guns remain with the lever-type safety so caution should be used.
PROS:
- High-grade military shotgun
- 9 rounds as opposed to 3 in the Hunting Shotgun
- Midground weapon between Hunting and Combat shotgun. Good mag cap combined with a tight, powerful fire spread.
- Semi-Automatic
CONS:
- Expensive
- Power and accuracy decreases with range
Flamethrower
TYPE: Terror Weapon
AMMO: Gasoline
POWER: Depends on how long you cook 'em.
RANGE: CQB Only
MAG CAP: N/A (Uses canisters rather than magazines)
DESCRIPTION: The flamer is by far one of the most effective weapons for close-quarters action on the market for one simple reason; FIRE. While I personally haven't had the chance to test this weapon very much yet, I know from a guy named Jakob how much fun it is. The idea of a flamethrower is pretty damn straight forward though. It shoots fire, plain and simple. I don't know how else to elaborate on this thing. It is a very big and heavy gun, however. You'll have to carry the canister on your back at all times if you plan on using it. The grand thing about this gun is its usefulness against those pesky assholes in power armor. Sometimes bandits salvage old power armor and use it as a heavy--though effective--form of protection. They basically become a walking tank. Slow, but indestructible. Now, have you ever tossed a potato rapped in tinfoil into a fire pit? That's what the armor does to the poor bastard inside. It's hilarious hearing them scream. Although I wouldn't recommend buying this weapon if you're worried about collateral damage...
PROS:
- Deadly at close range
- Intimidating
- Effective against armored targets
CONS:
- Expends ammo quickly
- Gasoline is expensive
- Collateral damage (might burn down your house)
- // It suffers from some glitches. Doesn't hurt NPCs. Only other players.
// OOC author's note, if Exile decides to make this weapon do fire damage over X-seconds like it does in Fallout, I'll edit this article to say it uses napalm instead of gasoline.
AEP7 Laser Pistol*
TYPE: Laser / Pistol
AMMO: Energy Cells
POWER: Medium
RANGE: Short to Medium-Long
MAG CAP: 30
DESCRIPTION: The AEP7 laser pistol was put into service to replace the AEP5 model. With a generous battery size, tight shot grouping at range, resilience to extended use, and fairly decent damage output, it is a very good choice for a sidearm and is used extensively in this role by the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave. The powerful energy beam is capable of inflicting great damage, and because it is a beam of energy, it is unaffected by weather or bullet drop. Despite the power of energy weapons however, most wastelanders discard them in favor of ballistics due to the rarity of energy cells and other energy weapon ammunition. These weapons also tend to be rather fragile. The iron-sights commonly do not align properly with the actual beam generator due to prior damage, which forces experienced users to 'eyeball' their shots and fire from the hip. Only groups capable of supplying the ammo to these weapons actually use them in combat. For most wastelanders, they are nothing more than a show piece.
PROS:
- High power side arm
- Highly accurate with a skilled user
- High magazine capacity
- Can penetrate all known armor
CONS:
- Offset iron sights (( another bug, can be worked around ))
- Expensive
- Expensive ammo
AER9 Laser Rifle*
TYPE: Laser / Rifle
AMMO: Microfusion Cells
POWER: High
RANGE: Medium to Long
MAG CAP: 24
DESCRIPTION: I finally get to own one of these bad boys! From what I've researched on it, the AER9 was actually not considered cutting-edge technology before the war, being an older model than the state-of-the-art AER12 laser rifle. It was only used in a handful of specialty units. The redeeming feature of the AER9 was its reliability. The focusing crystal array was housed in a titanium casing, rather than the gold alloys used in later models, which allowed it to withstand years of exposure to the environment without loss in array focus. In combat, the laser rifle is an exceptional weapon. It performs admirably at medium and long ranges where its accurate semi-automatic fire combined with its large ammo capacity makes short work of most opponents. However, its semi-automatic nature prevents it from being a viable close quarters combat weapon. As such, the laser rifle is a good weapon for traveling through the open wastelands where dispatching enemies at a distance is a frequent opportunity. Like other energy weapons, this rifle is capable of penetrating even the strongest of armor. Still, also like other energy weapons, the ammo being upwards of 500 caps a pop could be too expensive to make this a practical weapon for all but the most wealthy of wastelanders.
PROS:
- Very powerful
- Can penetrate all known armor
- Highly accurate
- Durable
CONS:
- Slow firing rate
- Ineffective at close quarters due
- Rare weapon
- VERY expensive
- Expensive ammo
* Marked items are subject to availability due to low supply and may not be in stock at Kira's Karbines. All other weapons are readily available for purchase.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, I guess that's about it. Stay safe out there guys! Get yourself a good gun, maybe some armor to go with it? Stay alive and be well! Thus concludes my guide to firearms found in the New England Wasteland. I hope it helped you all out.

Kira Alekhin

Never mind change to the Fallout Wiki T-93
The T-93[1] was designed and manufactured by Chinese industrial conglomerate Norinco for the People's Liberation Army during the Resource Wars, for the purpose of equipping the Chinese infiltrators and American fifth-columnists. To this end, it was chambered for the abundant NATO 5.56mm round. This model of Assault Rifle does slightly more damage than its American made counterpart.

Thousands of these weapons were smuggled into the US for use by Chinese operatives and sympathizers on the East Coast, and many remain functional even two hundred years after the Great War. These rifles are also proven to be ready for manufacturing in post-war conditions.
er

The laser rifle has a clip of twenty shots.

Excellent guide!  I would suggest making seperate areas for the American and Chinese Assault Rufles, as well as the Chinese Pistol.

You will need to update this soon.  There are other weapons people haven't seen yet, like the Flamer, or the Gattling Laser.

Also, you forgot my baby, Hannah!!!  (Plasma Rifle)

The laser rifle has a bettery of twenty shots.  A Microfusion Cell to be precise for Paintcheck.
Also, the Gattling laser has an Electron Charge Pack of two hundred shots.  If you wanted to add him in.  Only two currently, one BoS, one Enclave.
"If you don't expect gratitude, you'll seldom be dissapointed."

Enclave's been disbanded and the Gatling Laser we had was on Duran who quit FO for reasons I don't know (possibly because Silver wouldn't give us proper gear; he was constantly bitching about that) and never gave it back to us to use. So the BoS is now the only one with it. And it will likely stay that way since there's no way a Wastelander could keep a gatling laser fed.

Heh, I will have to update this soon as more toys show up. Reason however I did not include the Plasma rifle however is, for the moment, this guide is written in an IC style. If Kira hasn't personally seen a gun yet, she hasn't gotten to play with it.

There are people running around with one or two flamers I know of. No gatling lasers currently though that Kira has seen. She also knows there's some mysterious energy weapon out there she knows nothing about yet--because she possesses alien ammunition, but has no idea where it came from or what it goes to, so she experiments with it.

While I'd like to use this version, we also don't use this model in-game, so I just went with what I knew and made some crap up while I was at it. I'd like to see the Assault Rifle and Chinese Assault Rifle using two different models however. Right now that isn't the case. When it is though, I'll be updating this accordingly.

Right now there is technically only one assault rifle and it's the AK-103. I'd like to see more, even if they're ports from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. RP, just for sake of variety.

Was waiting to see how long it would take for someone to notice. Further confusing things though is the fact that the model in game is an AK74S (not to be confused with the AKS74U) which is chambered for 5.45 irl but even though 5.45 exists as an item in game it doesn't feed the AK.

There's only two that have ever appeared in-game for our roleplaying, one of which was illegitimately obtained, the other of which was (maybe) legitimately obtained, and both of these are glitched which is also why Exile (as far as I'm told) has not released them in our RP yet.

Therefore I know nothing about their in-game stats, and ICly Kira knows nothing about the specs of these weapons.

Hmmmm. *googles* This is correct. I tried to make an excuse for using the 103 on the idea that the Chinese modified the AK-103 for 5.56 rounds, but I didn't know there was already an AK-10X that accepted 5.56 rounds. Alright, I'll be doing a large renovation to the post about the AK. It is now the AK-102 instead of 103. :D

I actually did find an AK-74u once in-game, though for some bizarre reason I lost forever to my permanent box. :( Still haven't gotten a new one back. I got a Chinese Rifle to replace it from Cutch I think, but it's just not the same!

Oh well. I'd still like to see Exile put some new stuff in.

Good thread, reminds me to work on a carbine rifle.

Should remind you to PLEASE, PLEASE, make more semi-automatic rifles and shotguns and revolvers. In the USA, automatic rifles sold in stores is hard to come by except for certain desginated places but they have a small supply of them since you require (in Illinois) a class three FOID(Basically a liscense to use a weapon) which is really hard to get. A basic FOID requirment is to be mentally sane and have no criminal record or wait atleast 10 years after trial. A basic FOID allows people to use rifles semi-automatic rifles, pistols and semi-automatic shotguns.

Does more than a regular pistol--but I'll change it to list 'Medium' damage.

I don't know the actual stats of most of these weapons because I can't find the right file in the cache that covers SWEP damage.

This is a 9mm in Fallout: New Vegas. This isn't the world's only 9mm pistol.

In the real world, and in our RP, this isn't our pistol.
