So, i'de just like to hear from yall youngins why you hate Deus Ex 2 so much (or if you like it). I plan on making a comparisn of the two with some points that i have about why it was received the way it was but i'de like to open the floor to any and all for a dicussion on the subject of the 2nd in the series.

Main points of interest you may want to look at to talk about:

Ammo System
Augmentation System
Removal of Leveling
Map sizes
Story line
Characters
Types of Quests
Lock Picking

To start off, i'de like to bring up the ammo system.

One of the main faults for non-lethal players in Deus Ex is the severe limitation on engagement imposed by ammunition. Generally you could only find non-lethal ammunition on very specific enemies because it was highly specialised ammo, making it uncommon. This causes players (like myself) to be stingy and avoid confrontation or to find ways to work with the ammo restraints (if going non-lethal). For example, in Deus Ex I late found out that you can use lethal crossbow ammunition to shoot the guns off of soldiers (think it was 1-2 shots even untrained), which made the enemy run around aimlessly and allowed you to beat them unconcious with your baton. This saved much precious tranq darts for me and helped me much later on. Regardless of if you played Run-N-Gun or Non-lethal or just stealth, you would always receive ammo that mosst times you could not use. To address this issue, Deus Ex used a much more versatile system which gained it alot of negative criticism.

Deus Ex 2's system made all weapons of all types use the same ammunition. Rocket Launchers used up the same ammo pistols did and vice versa. As restrictive as this system was, this served as the much needed branch between stealth and run-n-gun gameplay. All stelath weapons ran off the same ammunition as the weapons used by a run-n-gunner. Non-lethal players could now tackle enemies and situtions with MUCH more leniency. Although poor in execution, the concept unifies both game styles so I give it some much unpopular rep in that regard.

The counter argument? I can imagine that some of the critiques aim towards the 'consolization' of the game by making it far more dumbed down, but I beg to differ. The ball's in your court now, feel free to dicuss about ammo or begin on a new topic

Despite what everyone says, I actually did enjoy Dues Ex Invisible War.  It may have been because it was the first one I played, and then after I played it I went and played the original, but I think the game holds merit on its own.  It is hard to come up with a sequel to an original that is THAT good.

Yep. It's bugs me when people say X game is not as good as the original but fail to see what makes it better in different areas, or ignore all of the changes because they're not the original.

Damned if you make a sequal and change the game engine/core mechanics because it isn't the originals.
Damned if you make a sequal using the same engine with no core mechanic changes because that's considered lazy/money hungry.

Really, I hated Invisible War because of the more restrictive levels in the game, the levels were a huge setback from the 1st.  It dumbed down the exploration side of the game, which for me, is possibly the best mechanic of the Deus Ex series.

Agreed, the level sizes and load times on the PC version absolutely annoyed me. That's probably my biggest complaint aswell. They still offered multiple ways around situations despite those small maps while providing far more sandbox style faction choice, which the first lacked. That and there are still a handfull of cool secrets that i've found and still need to find.

Honestly, these points probably tie into the story.

Deus Ex had much larger areas but there was alot more prescripting (despite your personal feelings you still end up being segwayed to all of the levels in the same order). In Deus Ex 2 you were segwey'd to areas but you could side with the different factions. It's like Deus Ex 2 tried to go for a more player's opinion oriented way, but in doing so sacrificed the depth of the story (which made the first so compelling to many).

Overwatch

I think the series could use a reboot, with today's engines. It should make a fairly challenging yet amazing concept.
I have a hard time playing through Deus Ex (1) Sheerly because of age, and being far too blinkered by today's games.

Yeah, I really think it could use a modern reboot too OverPony.

I think he meant a reboot of the first one, in which case go play the PS2 remake if that's what really bothers you, or install any HD texture packs (i know of 2).

The game's core engine has aged really well so I think a reboot would be pointless. WHat would you do, make the jumping slightly better? Make using guns super easy and ruin the style of gameplay? Add no-bio regenerating health and throw in a cover system?

Deus Ex Unreal Revolution
GEP GUN DLC

A reboot would be a fucking terrible idea, but that's besides the point. We'r ediscussing Deus Ex 2. Keep it on topic (which is why it's in the serious debates section instead of the very terrible video game section)
