Wurm Online

A Rough Guide to Wurm

Wurm Online is a totally unique, highly accessible online world that will drag you in, shake you up and down, bite you, annoy you, drive you completely mad and leave you wondering why you didn?t find it a million years ago!

Playing is easy. Just register for free and then download the Java client and packages by clicking on the Click to Play Wurm icon on the site. Oh, you need java, but there is a handy link for java just below. If you want to buy premium membership, just go to the shop and buy premium any time you like. It really is that simple.

So you arrive in Wurm

Getting around is easy. You can use the WASD keys, and the cursor arrows. The interface is highly intuitive needing very little instruction.

F3 opens your inventory, right clicking on objects allows you to move them, take them (assuming you are strong enough) open them, eat them, examine them ? most of the things you would expect to do with anything you can find.

You can create things, burn things, build things, flatten things, dig things, mine for things, chop things down, grow things, fight things, run away from things and even get eaten.

You can go anywhere and see anything and everything. And then, just in case you were enjoying yourself too much, you can get eaten again.

It?s Different

Wurm Online had to be different. What was the point of creating something that had been done time and time again? Yes, it would be 3d. Yes it would be multi-player. Yes, you can fight people on the Wild server and go round shouting about it. But it needs to be better than that.

And it is

 * On Wurm, you can see for miles
 * On Wurm, you can change the shape of the terrain by digging and moving dirt
 * On Wurm, you can grow things, pave things, move things
 * On Wurm, you can dig till you hit rock, then keep digging till you make vast caverns rich with iron ore, silver, and even gold.

On Wurm you can do all that, and more!

Wurm is a skill lead game. When you start, you can barely do anything, checking out your skills by pressing F2 will reveal a miserable set of skills. But from the moment you pick up a shovel and start digging, your digging skill starts to build. You chop down a tree and your wood cutting skill increases. Fight a deer with a sword and your fight skill increases. Many things in Wurm are hard to do, requiring patience and skill. But anyone can build skill in Wurm. Anyone can be a mason, a carpenter, a blacksmith, a weapons smith, a digger, a cook, a handyman (or woman), a tailor, a leather worker ? it is all there to learn, just pick up a tool and get working!

Where are the lands of Wurm

Wurm Online is just your starting point. Wurm itself is made up of lands; each land on its own server. The lands are pretty big, around 256 square kilometres, so there is loads of room. And the system that makes up the backbone of Wurm allows a vast amount of servers to be run, but not in isolation! Players can build boats and swim from server to server to trade, make a new home, or even to raid.

When a new land is launched it is an unmapped, vast territory of woodland, lakes, mountains, deserts, marshes and steppes. There are no roads, no buildings, no mines and no food! Everything in Wurm is and will be built by the players themselves ? we just give them the world to play with!

Home and Wild

There are two types of land in Wurm. Home is a protected land, peaceful (apart from those things that want to eat you). Life here is about building and crafting ? and we don?t mean some little shed and the odd chair. Players have reformed entire mountains, built fortresses, harbours, roads, towns, markets, houses, canals ? some projects took a few days, others have taken months!

On Home Lands, stealing is punished, PvP is not allowed and the moderators try and keep the peace ? to be fair, players here want a peaceful life. This is a rare game where you can actually play without having to prove anything!

Wild servers are rather different. These are where Kingdoms clash, where there are outlaws, where raiding rather than farming is the way of life. People look kind of different here too ? you may not want to invite them all round to dinner! And some of those things that want to eat you? Well, they just get nastier and bigger.

The People

But whatever the server, the thing that drives this game, this way of life, is the people of Wurm ? Wurmians, we call ourselves.

Wurm is a community; in fact Wurm is lots of communities! Villages of different sizes, homesteads, wanderers, fighters, hunters, farmers, foresters, cooks, miners, travellers ? all working on their skills, their defences, their towns and farms, and all talking and learning from each other through the comprehensive chat system built into the Wurm Client.

A Social site? A War game? A strategy Game? An adventure game? Or all of those and a whole heap more?

Wurm is just Wurm. And it is full of people who love it!

To find out more, look through the other pages of this article, or check out our forums and our wiki ? the Wurmpedia.

But, I have a better idea! Sign up and come and join us. There are loads of people like me who will welcome you, help you out and get you started. If you come to the Jenn Kellon home server you will find me around someplace, no doubt, so see you there!

Wurm is Waiting

Skills in the Game

Just about anything you do in life is a process of learning, and as you learn one thing it impacts upon your ability to do something else.

On Wurm, much of life revolves around a skill system that touches most of what you do. When you first start the game you have little in the way of skills. Most are not even listed and those that are have rather sad little numbers like 1.00. But this is your starting point. Building upon your skills in Wurm is very much part of the adventure, even though it can seem a little daunting at first.

All tasks in Wurm have a difficulty; whether that is nailing a plank to a house wall, making a mallet or statue or even digging a hole. As you succeed at a task you gain a small amount in the relevant skills. As you first start the game it can seem you are gaining skill quite quickly, but be warned, like life, things get more difficult the better you want to become, and as you get better in a particular skill, so you will need to do more and more challenging tasks to keep the skill level rising.

Wurm contains more than one hundred different skills in which you can excel. You can become pretty good in many different skills in only a few days or weeks, but to become a master in one skill can take months. It could take a lifetime to master all the skills ? nobody has done it yet! The skill tree has been designed in such a way that most players only ever master a few skills but are capable in most of them. This allows different players to choose different skill paths, not all ending up at the same point. It makes the community work that much better; the smith relies on the miner for the metals needed to create the tools for the miner to mine the metals.
Tools and Weapons and a box to put them in

Wurm has a very advanced system when it comes to items in the game. About the only thing that comes pre-made is you! I mean your character. Everything else like pickaxes, backpacks, catapults, nails (and a few things that even I don?t know what they are for) are made by the players from the resources you find around

Every item has weight, damage, quality level, size, temperature, possible enchantments, a custom description, and other types of data that can make every item very unique and seem real. The two things that focus players minds most are quality (QL) and damage (dmg). All items decay; some like food rather faster than say something like a stone wall. But the higher the quality, the slower and longer the decay, so making an item as high quality as possible has distinct advantage.

Quality also has effect on your work; using a high QL pickaxe will allow you to mine much faster than a low QL one. Though the QL of the rockshards or ore you produce will be related to your skill. How high an items QL is in the first place will depend on your skill and the QL of the resources!

Everything is linked together in one way or another, giving lots of reasons to work on your skills and making the process far more interesting and satisfying. I promise you, when you get your first home-made pick-axe past QL10 (the quality of the tools you are given at the beginning of the game), the feeling is wonderful! A great pick-axe is QL80 or even higher, of course, but we shall ignore that for the moment!

For all your tools you do need the resourse to make them with. A pickaxe is an iron pickaxe head and a wooden handle; you need iron and wood!

There are many different natural resources spread out over a server. But not evenly ? nothing is THAT easy! Some resources, mainly various metals, clay, tar, and peat, but also different wood types or even a particularly flat area can be considered valuable and worth fighting or bargaining over (depending on whether you are on Home or Wild.) Metals on the wild servers have a higher maximum quality level than on the home servers, and blacksmiths on home will want to buy this higher QL iron lumps to make the best tools and weapons.
Homes and Villages
Once you have a couple of basic tools and resources, you can start to build a home. Houses on Wurm, like in real life, are very important. Your character cannot carry the world ? there is a limit to the size of your inventory ? and you need a place to store things. Also, bears can?t pick locks, so when a hungry one is chasing you, shutting yourself in your house is a pretty good idea.

You don?t need much to build a house; planks from logs, nails from iron, a mallet, a saw, an axe, a pickaxe. You do need some carpentry skill, but putting up a few wooded fences will soon give you enough skill to knock up a 1 tile sized shed.

You do need somewhere to build however. Wurm is big! And there is more than enough room for everyone. But there are advantages in grouping together. If you want to build near another player, do ask first though ? they may have plans! You also need a flat bit of land and probably access to trees and a mine. In Wurm, you can do it your self! Get your shovel out and flatten a bit of land and dig a hole to make a mine.

Deeds

A 1 tile shed is all very well, but there is a limit to how much you can store. And you may want protection that extends beyond locking your self in the shed!

On Wurm you can buy homestead and village deeds that cover a certain amount of tiles.

A size 5 is the smallest ? that is a plot 5 tiles either way of a central point, so 11 tiles by 11 tiles. A homestead means you are the sole owner which is perfect for the player who just wants to get on with life themselves. A village, however, allows you to add citizens, run a democracy or an autocracy, and share your life with others. Some villages have just a handful of friends working together, but others have a much larger populations and undertake massive projects, road building, have large farms, diverse skills, and are generally micro societies. On the Wild servers, these large communities are forces to be reckoned with!

Deeds come with Spirit Guards; semi transparent characters that attack any unwelcome intruder that crosses the deed borders, whether they be an enemy or a non-lock-picking bear. Deeds cost money to buy using the in-game currency of Gold, Silvers, Coppers and Irons, and the deed guards need to be paid monthly ? no guards, no deed!

Silvers can be bought through our online store. However, you don?t need to get out your hard earned Euros, Dollars, Pounds or whatever ? Wurm has its own fledgling economy!

The Wurm Economy

Many games these days make an unbreakable link between what goes on in-game and your wallet. Wurm tries to be different.

The only money you really need to part with is for your premium membership. In the game itself you can earn money as well as spend it!

This economy is strictly in-game only. You cannot, earn a pile of silvers and turn them into a real life currency. However, you can buy your deed, pay for you guards, buy resources or tools, and of course you can sell too!

Many players have personal merchants that they stock with wares made by themselves or their village ? anything from enchanted tools to armour, meals to seeds.

Getting work is another way to earn money. Players working on large projects will sometimes need large amounts of planks cut, or earth dug or more skilled work and will pay for your labour. And of course, money you earn you then spend and this keeps the Wurm economy alive. And as you earn more, sell more, and end up with more money so you become better known and get a sense of meaningfulness to your wealth and influence.

Most players do a mixture of earning in game and buying money. Deeds can be quite expensive in Wurm terms and many players will buy them with silvers bought from the Wurm Store. However, like many things in Wurm, you have a choice! And that is one of the so many ways that makes this game different!

Check the forums, it's not all about killing, and at your inexperienced level when you join the game, you'd get your ass handed to you by a DEER.
And yes, Golden Valley is fucked over with ganking critters for the moment, Rolf is working on the issue as we speak.

You deserved it, Wurm is about Socialising and Creation, not Roleplaying God, killing stuff and fucking up eachother's land.
