K I guess this goes under random. Anyone up for or think a Mercenary guild would be cool? I mean it's medieval times. Mercs were a common job for those without morals.

Even if so that doesn't mean that in a medieval setting there can't be mercs. Back then Mercenary's were common and used often. Many armies were composed of mercenarys simply because  it was cheaper than hiring troops full time. If they died no money lost, there dead... Although instead of a central mercs guild I was thinking of the ability to have multiple guilds that players make. They can compete with each other. Of course the amount of guilds is going to be based on server population and supply/demand. A small server can cope with one guild were a 50+ server may need 2 or 3 since at that point warfare will be more common. But I do agree that a central "Mercenary guild" wouldn't make sense and would be stupid and cliché

You'll be able to have different groups, but those are just the... "moderating" organizations.

Mercenary guilds shouldn't even be encouraged by the administration because in case of mercenary RP, people just get together and think they're going to have great RP, when all what actually happens is fdso gah frrzlmpr blaaaa huygggnl asdf;lf so that they could earn some money. This money is spent on gear so that the cycle could repeat. If people want to engage in this sort of RP, then leave it to the players alone and don't encourage it by setting up official guilds.

Mercenaries Meh... If anything people who want to do that kind of thing need to be careful and those who want to Hire them need to do it in a manner where appropriate and for proper uses e.g. Protecting Shipments from bandits in the case of small Companies, as guards at an event of some kind, Maybe for Shaking down other companies or raiding THEIR shipments or extra troops in an attack. Not the idea some people might have of "Kill John Doe who lives here for XXXXX Currency" and proper Merc's need to be quite picky with jobs like that. Plus alot of the money they get I would wager they use up on food, Drink and repairing their gear/homes or paying rent so the infinite Gear cycle would need to be counter balanced. But of course someone who sees merc's creating that loop could use "reasons" to rapidly increase the price of food and Drink to break the cycle for a day or two

The overreaching organizations are going to be for moderation purposes, they aren't actually guilds that everyone is going to be encouraged to join. People will make merc stuff whether we encourage it or not.

Mercs are soldiers not assassins. They fight wars and protect facilities for money. They do not typically run around assassinating random civilians for cash. You don't see modern day soldiers carrying out assassinations you see specially trained people do it instead. Unless of course by "kill John Doe" you mean kill John Doe who's in that massive medieval fortress surrounded by trained guards and turrets for archers to shoot from, I think mercs would be necessary for that.

They way the overarching clan thing is envisioned is like the Hunter's Guild from Monster Hunter. They're there to help if you want their help but otherwise don't bother you. For the most part, the Guilds are for Clerical purposes, (or as far as the Wizard one, moderation purposes.)

I've been on other servers that had just stopped running because they got tired of dealing with bukkit's shit.

bukkit isn't the problem, I've just been dealing with some dumb shit the past few days that's been taking up a lot of my time. I don't want to launch if I know I can't be there for at least an hour or two after the server actually starts, as far as the guts/files of the server go, everything's pretty much done.

So this is going to be a fantasy based server with magic and special abilities.... what I am wondering is if it will have any steampunk/early engineering aspects?

Something extreme would be robotic arms or eyes to replace parts of the body lost in battle.
Something minor would be steam powered engines or stuff that is actually in the game like pistons and red stone.

GeniusIngenuity is the 'Engineering' school and it's limited to pre-1300s technology. Anything shy of a cannon, really.

I plan on being an everyman since I guess it's the closest thing to a normal human and he'll be like a sell sword until he dies or gets money to open up a shop and raise a family or be a knight for a hold or kingdom. The Reveris dream.

The Totems are just some peaks I named.
I'm gonna be making a smaller map that is completely snowish, and a desert type map. multiverse is a pretty good plugin.

So if I were to make a little tavern on the side of the road or keep my tent by the water, would there be any way to protect the land? Or is it at the mercy of everyone's nefarious minds? I know I could make a faction and claim land but I don't think I meet the requirements for a faction, unless I may start one for traveling merchants?

And that's the caveat of being alone. For now I'm purposely leaving stuff like that how it is, 1) to promote settlement growth, 2) because I'm a bastard.

In other news, I made a snow-land that can be accessed by going through the Telecrystal gate by spawn, into the Ultistabilized Telewave Pocket Dimension, or UTPD and going through the portal to Kall. There's also a portal to the WIP Mage's College.

As far as lore about Kall goes: It ties into portal-magic, but basically the ancient Hru-tul had weygates called Overhavet, which were made similar to how modern portals are made. I'm gonna be writing a forum book titled "Treatise on Modern Portals: On Weyves" that'll expand more on this. An Overhavet leading to Kall was discovered.

As far as lore about the Mage's College (Magus Collegia - name subject to change), basically, eras ago a group of all the races of mer and man came together conjured up the Magus Isles, and now every few millenia the Isles move across the oceans to wherever "shit is going down." This happens to be in Esgar, which is why the College has appeared off the coast.

In even other news, some errors have come up with the server, so it's down for now. Sorry. It'll be back up as soon as it can, but rest assured that none of your progress will be wiped.

Anyone reading this want to get in on the faction I'm starting?
I have one building (my royal tower  8)) already finished if you want to get a feel for what the architecture will look like. The faction will be based on three moral standards: love, honor, and truth. In other words, it's going to be a pretty civil based society and will focus on gaining power and money, etc.. So yeah, I need at least two other people in on it for me to start the faction.
Thought why the hell not post it up in this bitch.

As far as I know it doesn't break the Nether and I would extremely-emely-emely surprised if it did. It's enterable, though it isn't custom like the main map(s).

That's fine. A custom nether takes all the fun out of that hell-hole.

If you pop through one of the portals we use, and are in creative mode, it will tp you to the Nether.

If anyone was curious about swearing fealty, we take a small tax at-ratio to your population and administer whatever aid we can. Any one who currently rules their nation will be granted the honorary title of Arbitrator to better adjudicate their realm. We also request you offer us a small discount when trading certain commodities, most of which are fish.

Speaking of Lore, will anything be done with ruins? In the "Reveris Information" thread, it said the continent was re-discovered, so it might make sense to have ruins. Since people seem to have actually explored, maybe the Magus Islands affect when they show up? Just throwing ideas around here, we clearly need an Archeologist on the server. *coughcoughnudgenudge*

The Magus Isles sort of pop-up every century or so, no one knows why, but this has been the most recent siting of them for a few centuries and no one knows wtf happened to them. The college itself is gone but the islands remain for whoever to settle on. Those might be the only ruins you'll find, unless someone has made some without me knowing.

There are a few things, but you won't find any lost cities or sunken kingdoms. Not right now, at least.

I'm sure no one would mind if you had a settlement with some "ancient" lore that isn't too meta. Like the use of old buildings that were they and you don't know who/what lived in them before?

Are their any flatlands or is it all facking Pine forest. I decided to start a small village on the beautifully made snow lands because I couldn't find any flat areas.

Yeah, there are some flatlands, but they're far into the continent from where you start.
