This is simply an idea and in no way must be implemented, nor does it coincide with my charatcer

Scientia is a mage guild created to increase the world knowledge base of all things magic or mysterious. The institution itself is dedicated to collecting books and spells in order to archive them and rarely will give out these items unless they are in surplus or someone has shown grand initiative as a procurer of knowledge and other artifacts, Arch Mages get more power in being able to use these items though are not unlimited in use as the five total Arch Mages are set in place to check each other. Together this system of dedicated mages work together to increase all intelligent races overall knowledge base. There are no predetermined classes as the system is for knowledge and artifact collection and has no need to set such standards; this allows for a simple system of two main groups and a higher group.

Arch Mages: They often live long lives as they can use magic to extend their lifespan and at death they must choose a new person to succeed them, if they die without choosing then a competition will be held for all  Adept Mages and Lesser Mages to compete in becoming the Arch Mage. The Arch Mages can have any elemental preference as it is based on balance on knowledge and power not elements.

Adept Mages: Often Adept Mages have been with the guild for sometime or show great power or knowledge giving them a higher status over other mages. They have no control over Lesser Mages, but often will be given greater tasks complete and greater powers to use then Lesser Mages. They also have the ability to invite people outside the guild into the guild without approval from a higher up.

Lesser Mages: Lesser Mages can range from anywhere from the loyalist of mages to the guild to the newest as it is not based on age or loyalty, but on power and knowledge. This is the basic class of mage in the guild and is given normal tasks with rarely any special granted powers. They need permission to let in someone from outside the guild.

Entry: To join the guild you must be accepted by all five Arch Mages together and must first be evaluated by an Adept Mage who would then take you to the five Arch Mages. There is no specific test as it is based on alignment of your mana and/or personality. To be given items from the guild you must ask an Arch Mage for one or will sometimes receive them for exceptional feats of wisdom or initiative, for certain requests you may need permission from all five Arch Mages. Since the library is considered a neutral zone no laws from outside the guild are applied inside the guild, but that does not mean that you are allowed to break rules of the society outside the guild because of your membership.

Contacting: To contact the guild you must seek out a mage of any ranking and send them with a message, depending on urgency or who is the sender either you will get a personal visit, message through a mage, or on extreme cases you will be spoken to telepathically. Telepathy is a last resort as it often leads to accidental mind melding and takes an extensive amount of mana and energy to use.

Jobs and Requests: The guild has an announcement board near the main entrance of the guild that will give important information to guild members and a job room or request room will have boards with jobs or requests either for the pure benefit of the guild or sometimes with an added reward. Events and large jobs will often be posted on the announcement board to accrue more guild members to participate. If you have take a job or request in the board room simply sign your name at the bottom of the board, any allies accompanying you must also sign the board. "Example: -Bob"

Lore:
The Magistry of the Occult has existed for hundreds of years, some even believe it was created at the birth of magic in society but that may just be speculation on rumors. The guild was founded by the first High Mage of organized society before records were regularly kept of such events as the creation of a minor guild. This guild grew strength as the High Mage could easily attract the attention of the Monarchy and other young and old mages eager to give aid to society. The guild soon grew in size and strength becoming the largest if not the only magic guild in the land, integrating all other guilds into it and soon becoming stronger then the Monarchy.

The guild was originally known as "Mages Union", but after growing in a small social system its named was changed to "The Magistry of the Occult" or Scientia for short. It had passively gained knowledge, books, and artifacts over the course of time with new members joining everyday, but originally was just used to help the people of the kingdom with tasks such as dispatching goblins or scaring off raiders. This unfortunately left the Monarchy lazy and unused, which at first made all happy as the Monarchy didn't have anything to do other then let the mages take care of business. Though as time went on money started to flow more into the pockets of Scientia then the Monarchy causing friction as the Monarchy lost power and money.

This soon lead to conflict as the Monarchy plotted to overtake Scientia and gain complete control again, of course the guild would never have this as the Monarchy would probably demolish all they had worked for. As the Monarchy struck out against Scientia with propaganda and often assassinations on wandering mages the High Mage with all his age knew their time was near. The Monarchy, after years of research starting even before the guild's original creation, had a fully functioning anti-mage assault team armed with magic repelling gear and mana consuming weaponry. They charged for grand guild of Scientia killing all that occupy it regardless of race, sex, and age all to destroy the guild that stole their reign. They soon overtook all the guild as even the strongest warriors were overwhelmed by the shear mass of the army and soon all the mages had perished, but a select five that had made it to the top of the tower.

The end of the tale of Scientia is not well known and may simply be rumor, but many believe that the five mages warped the room they were in faraway underground where they could not be disturbed, to build a new guild for all mages and that until recently they had kept to themselves as myths. The old guild castle was completely smashed to the ground after the Monarchy looted and destroyed it; not after that event though was there a rebellion of the people who overthrew the Monarchy to their own demise. Even for all the help the mages gave the kingdom fell to ruin and turned into nomads of citizens who wandered off as the home they once new crumbled at the loss of all governmental control.

The guild soon became a place of refuge for mages who needed a place to stay or a purpose to live and was used to store knowledge and artifacts to further the advancement of the base knowledge of all of society. Now it is a well established guild sitting shallowly below the ground of a new society giving aid to the new powers of that land and growing larger by the day as more people join the cause to protect and savor knowledge. Unfortunately most of the records and old knowledge was lost to the dungeons of the old guild castle as only a small portion of the depths were actually eradicated and filled with dirt and stone. It is said though that great power is held there and the truth of the guild and all that existed at that time lay in the ruins of the old guild dungeons, no one is sure what became of the High Mage, but many believe that he is residing in the old dungeons waiting for someone to appear.
Help for hire! Seriously ask me for help, I need things to do.

Seems good, needs a little bit of diversity.

I'm just waiting to mess up your day. Honest.

I like criticism, but diversity is a bit vague.

Perhaps different types of mages? Like perhaps a mage who solely uses magic and a mage a tank like mage using armour and a sword and shield and some kind of protective magic for extra defence or using a magical weapon.

I think that's what James means by diversity, little more into different types of mages instead of just two.

I'm not sure how I got here.

He never specified the types of magi, just their ranks. I've played Terraria once that I can remember so my opinion is irrelevant but, I think the ranks are fine. Keep it simple, keep it clean.

Also, Loyalist is a noun. The phrase you were looking for is "most loyal". (Referring to the main post under "Lesser Mages")

I agree. If the guild were a military organisation, then perhaps predetermined types would be acceptable. But since it is (apparently) simply a gathering of mages, I think the 'type' of mage should depend entirely on the individual characters.

As these fine people have explained it does not need predetermined types as it is welcome to all mage types of a positive alignment regardless of skill level. You could be a warrior who uses a single restoration spell and be accepted as long as you do not show a tendency to cause destruction or harm the innocent
