Suggestion: Sectioning the map (Important)

Please read all of the following before posting. You will probably end up saying something foolish if you don't.

So here's the deal. I made a test map simulating the suggestion Silver made about sectioning the map with tunnels and an area portal to increase performance and boost FPS. It worked beautifully. I spawned a ton of props on one side of the map until the FPS dropped considerably, then traveled though the tunnel to the other side, I turned on wireframe mode and checked, everything on the other section of the map stopped being rendered! This completely removes the need to make a clip plane (distance at which objects stops being rendered in front of you) which looks god awful (remember hgn_thezone_a8?) and allows me to make a nice fog that never becomes opaque. I sat down for while and thought about the possibilities with this new type of sectioning and came up with what I think is a great idea. I think we can fulfill the ability to have a hardcore role player's paradise while still letting people who want to have a little action be allowed to have gunfights and whatnot. These map "sections" can be quarantined off so different RP rules can apply. There would be three (more if you can make up more) types of zones. There would be "Combat RP Zones" and "RP Zones", and ?Mutant RP Zones?. RP zones will let hardcore role players do what they like in peace. When they get tired of doing passive RP stuff, they can head over to the Combat RP Zone where they can choose to engage in a firefight. Do not get me wrong. Some of these zones do not force rules, you can still RP in the combat zone, it's just the added chance of being shot. Furthermore, Mutant RP Zones will be the primary place for mutants to hang out, they can also be in Combat RP Zones, but it is not a suitable Mutant Zones will particularly have more underground, scary places which is more suitable for mutants. Lastly, I think different sections will make the rules more clear and knowing what is suitable more clear for administrators. It's obvious that if a player open fires randomly in the RP Zone he is going to be kicked while in the Combat RP Zone life goes on normally.

Once again, these sections does not exactly force rules, they often curve more towards the type of gameplay it wants. RP happens in all of the zones, but it's more suitable in the RP Zone. Combat RP can happen in the Mutant RP Zone, hell if you wanted, you could gather a team together and go bloodsucker hunting! The only time when combat should occur in the RP zone is when a player trespasses into faction territory. So if you happen to sneak into the duty base and happen to get caught, they can have their way with you. The last rule would be is that still have to RP in each zone regardless. The Zones just give varying rights while Role playing.

Don't use so many effects likie on redemption, it drops fps gradualy over time and gets annoying to reconnect every so often.

Also: I like the idea of different rp zones, but I don't want all the minges pouring in clogging up our server thinking it's fallout mod 6.0
We still have to keep it a roleplay server, the idea needs some work, but it would be revolutionary when perfected.

My exact thoughts too Locke. I do worry that minges will all go to the combat zones and simply not RP at all, but tis' the beauty of the sections. If the chaos is too high in the combat sections, you may escape and go to a less hostile type RP section of the map via tunnel or valley. And when that happens, only the players fighting will be left to deal with their disputes and eventually one side or the other will run out of money or supplies to buy more weapons. It's nearly a simulation of a faction war.

Don't worry, it would clearly still be a Serious RP server.

It's really as simple as this as far as Combat RP Zones go. You may fire upon anyone in the Combat Zone, as long as you are RPing and it's an IC reason, even if you are killing for weapons. You may say "That's not fair, I don't want people hunting me down!", again, this is what is awesome about this idea. If you don't want to take the risk of getting killed and looted, you don't have to like you do in regular unified maps such as redux, you may stay in RP zones and have fun. Sure, you are going to get a bad apple and someones gonna snap and kill a person or two in an RP Zone, but they can be dealt with quicker with this system. If a murder committed on an RP Zone is reported to an admin, the admin will know it was clearly an inappropriate thing to do in such a place.

omg thats a great idea- no rules in a combat zone would solve most flaming jesus impement this idea! RP zones and combat would be good because you know what your getting yourself into.


"DING DING DING!" The only rule rule in the Combat Zone is that you still have to RP. Other than that, you nailed it right on the head. The reason why you would be allowed to fight in that section is because you know what you are getting yourself into.

We would have to make it clear you still RP in all of the zones. It's Combat RP Zone, not Combat Zone.

Zones, Its kills so meny factors in a Non-zones like Patroling baces(will never get attacked) and camping around a fire (worring whats gona jump out) and not to mention the IC implacations. like im going to buy this gona only never to use but somwhere that i can get shot out of nowere by an Aimbot and radar. I just dont like the idea of combat zone, it takes away so meny things that make RP what it is.

Why do we need this? We already only have 20 People in the server AVG. Do we realy need to split them up into pieces?

Yes, the map is not nearly done. there will be sections added on through tunnels. I do that because I can see up area portals that improve FPS a shitload and since sections are going to be the way it is, we might as well try this simply because it sounds like a great idea and something no other server has tried to do.

Lol, what if you made a section for each section of SoC, like Cordon, The Garbage, The Army Warehouses, etc.?

That would be epic..truely epic. That will also time some time to make giving how complex some areas from SoC can be.(the NPP right after the brainscorcher goes off ._. Now that was an epic fight!)

I don't mean the whole nine yards, just a simple remake of each section, not the elaborate way it is in the game.

Just gotta say this, but your maps are really laggy, even though it's small. I'm getting 20 FPS sometimes just chilling, then it goes down to 10-5 randomly, then I have to reconnect. This is a problem.

I'v been on the maps for hours and my FPS only drops when a shitload of props are on the map (or if the sever wants to be bugger with tool gun). Rus, you may wanna check setting, and other programs you have running.

Haha, that's truly not it, because OTHER people experience the problem.

I run a steady 20 FPS on the map, it really IS laggy.

Make sure the trees and other props fade after however many units. 3000 units to 3001 units would probably work.

Hey Hostel, I was just reading this over and I got a idea.

I don't really like the RP / Combat zones. I would must rather have it all tailored towards role-play and not combat, I do like the idea of bloodsucker hunting, and mutant role-play, this would give those trusted members / Donators a chance to role-play without getting shot.

But here is my little idea, how about adding a few zones we know and love, like the Cordon and Garbage leading to the bar / town area, than branching off. So the military can have their checkpoint and we can have our authentic zone.

I was thinking what if you added the brain scorcher type zone, and a area behind it, give something for us Vet S.T.A.L.K.E.Rs and Exp S.T.A.L.K.E.Rs to aim for, other than our usually passive and bloodsucker hunting. If you do take the idea of the zone, make a mutant role-play area somewhere reachable by players, like not past a brain scorcher, so we can have our hunts, and stuff.

Just a few of my idea's, it's late and I have not read the thread fully, this may be a re-post in some way. Thanks tho.


( What I'm really trying to get at is, please don't make Combat zones, the whole of the zone is a combat zone, I don't think places should be made for combat, since it can happen anywhere. I would like to see more passive than gun fights ATM, as ducky said, it's becoming more of a RPG last thing we need is a place where people can go to farm guns and play CS:S.)

Ah, fade distance also work for prop_static? Well I'll be damned. Thanks for the advice. I've really been trying to optimize this map with carefully placed hint brushes and area portals. I even went to just deleting a couple more trees to squeak out some FPS.

Read more carefully. I think you're missing something. Even someone like Silver is agreeing to allow me to do this. Here's a quick picture of how this system works. I'll take your advice into consideration. Thank you for the suggestion.

Precisely Rus. The only catch is that all the stuff I'm making is pretty original. Only bare concepts are being used. Red Forest will be a foresty area, but will have no resemblance to the Red Forest in STALKER SoC, likewise with all the other areas.


Red Forest in S.T.A.L.K.E.R in CS was freaking epic.

Okay People, pay attention to the Codelog below, this is currently being discussed with Hostel:

Removing the Tunnels, imlementing more Agroprom-Underground Style ones. Sewageworks Possible.
Expanding the Ravine to one side of the area, and then barring off the Tunnel/valley it comes from with rocks.
Possibly merging parts of Wildterritory's VMF as new areas, that would include the 100 rads bar.
Motha-fookin' Freedom Warehouse Complex ;3 Just like in Clear Sky, albeit smaller, just one of those two great Warehouses would be a Wonder to the Atmosphere.
A few more potholes, maybe a Displacement cave leading from the Current New Area to the Tunnels, albeit Clear Sky's Agroprom Underground Entrance(Epic dirt tunnel :3)

DISCUSS!
IMO THe Underground should be the STK/STM Area, while the Plantation Sector is the RP'd Conflict. (We had a great one last night, Eco's raided the Bandit base, although Silver evened the odds by kicking three of em >.>)

Also: Freedom and DUTY should have a Area where they can Face-off at will, much like Bandits and Mils. (Something reminiscent of Clear Sky's Tech Demos.)
