Title: Monitors Megathread - Guides\Q&A
Post by: Silver Knight on 21-09-2014
This is a guide by myself for those who are looking for the best Gaming Monitors and understanding the differences between specs while listing a few personal favorites.

Panel Types

The 3 main Panel types on the market for a monitor are - TN - IPS - VA

TN has the fastest response speeds, IPS has the best colors\viewing angles and VA is a mix of them both. There are variations of IPS (IPS is LG's own brand, Samsung also has their own panel similar to this (PLS) )

This video will give you more information on that:

Monitors vs TV's for your computer

Monitors should be your choice for your computer, why? In short- Resolutions on tv's tend to be smaller, so you get a bigger stretched picture, also the refresh rates are generally terrible for gaming.

Refresh Rates

30 - 60 (Standard) -  120 - 144

Are refresh rates a big deal? Yes and no, obviously the higher the refresh rate the better however that really depends on the use. For office work, browsing the web it won't make any different, same applies for playing strategy games or movies (Movies are 30fps thus 30hz)

Refresh rates matter for FPS and fast-paced games where every second counts, however you can only make use of this with a powerful enough machine that can run at a higher fps, so if you are currently running at 60fps on counter strike, you won't see a difference as your hardware is holding you back.

This video shows the differences:

Resolution\Definition

720 - 1080p - 1440p - QHD - 4k - 5k - 7k

The higher the resolution the more you see on the screen but the more hardware power you need to accomplish this. 1080p is the current standard for monitors, 1440p is getting much more common and 4k montiors have just entered the market at an affordable amount.

1080p is perfect for 24" montiors, 1440p tends to not work as well on this size monitor due to the stretching.

4k Monitors currently range from 28" and above such as the Asus PB287Q 4k montior.

Aspect Ratio

16:9 - 16:10 - 21:9

The aspect ratio plays a vital part to how the display built and displays the content, he resolution can be the same but the monitor it'self is bigger\smaller in width and length.

For example a 16:9 monitor is a tiny bit smaller than 16:10 in height, whereas 16:9 is typically the standard, that compared to the new market aspect ratio of 21:9 displays is very small in width as 21:9 are greatly extended in width however, the inches across (diagonally) remain the same so height is lost.
