Title: Oh sweet lord
Post by: Zante on 20-03-2014
Yo, I'm Zante. I used to play on the HGN servers a very long time ago, hence my old ass forum account. Suprised it still exists.

Just popping in to say hello and see what's new.  :P

Oh wow, didn't expect an intro thread. I remember the days when a new one popped up every 2-3 days ;-;.

Welcome back.

Ohai, I've noticed that the Garrysmod seriousRP community has went spiraling downhill and I was hoping HGN was untouched by the plague that consumes the server list.

Do any of your Gmod serious RP servers exist anymore? D:

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm reading the threads right now on general discussion.  :-\

Also, thanks for the welcome back!

We all reach the same conclusion. This isn't because the quality of roleplay has gone worse in GMod, but because it always been objectively bad. Notice how almost everyone says that "in 200x/20xx, roleplay was much better. Trust me, I was there" -- in reality, these people just got bored of GMod RP, but still think that because they had fun before it must mean that it had been better for absolutely everyone. I've been in the RP scene since 2007, the year when TaconBanana kicked off with TS1 created by Rick Dark and when RP has been in continual growth in popularity. The only changes that occurred since then were only about making the RPG part more complicated. The truth is, Garry's Mod is a terrible platform for RP because of the (man)children that make up the majority of its playerbase and for most, this means catering to this majority. The servers that don't follow the classic structure remain unknown and forgotten. There are, however, many that would claim that they're doing things differently, but that's just a cheap way of getting more players.

There are very little, if any, servers that actually encourage development of the character from a story-telling perspective as opposed to getting wealthier and powerful through means that are provided by the script. The reason why all servers eventually fall into the traditional template of 'Get Gear, Fuck Bitches' is because server owners feel the need to place distracting elements to make sure people will stay connected. The most important of these elements is a hierarchy of items, which means that any player can participate in the economy (which is a joke) and become better than other players (aka growing the e-peen). Now this is where 100% of server owners fuck up and any further talk of roleplay is a waste of time, because once they choose this system(it's literally in every RP script), they automatically a place a deadlock on real character development and now everyone's busy with improving their gear -- good job, you're now part of the shitty system that plagues this game.

As much as SilverKnight wants to deny this, but HGN has run its course. I thank HGN for the 5 years I spent here, but we all grew up and nobody's going to come back. It used to be a joke that HGN will become MineDog v2, but it is very much true now. For those who don't know, MineDog was the first SRP community ever and ZoneRP(HGN's predecessor) drew inspiration from it. MineDog still exists, but literally nobody knows about it. (http://www.mine-dog.net/)  It's dead now, but it ran an obscure forum since 2005, despite the fact that nobody ever visited it after it became irrelevant.

No problem. ;)

@Jake - HGN was never a gmod community, it was founded before gmod was invented. Just because we don't have any GMOD servers anymore, does not mean it's irrelevant or has to shut down, that is not HGN's primary goal or function.

You're quite literally the only person that has been here since before HGN became 99%(1% - because that 24/7 empty CSS/TF2 server we had gave us worldwide popularity) about GMod and there were very few left by the time SRP came around and became a thing (The only ones I can remember at the moment is Streex and Int0x, but they vanished by mid/late 2009). Therefore the ancient history of HGN is rather irrelevant, unless you're implying we're going to start hosting Dark RP, WC3 and SAMP servers and draw back all our pre-GMod players, some of whom might even be married and have children by now. Or even better, let's become another fucking Kotaku(we were a "gaming news network" before).

I am not saying that HGN should be shut down, but you're also implying that HGN has a "primary goal" or a "function", which it does not, save for being a storage of memories and old dox material.

The exact same thing that has happened to HGN, the Garrysmod SRP bust, is happening to a friends community also. I've come back to HGN hoping that somwhere in the dark that Crussaria still exists so I can fly around as my raven or I could sneak about as my old Bloodsucker on STALKER. My friend has delved into the giving people everything they want and if they get too rich he metagame Permakills their characters for shits and giggles and the constant "Passive" (Cyber 24/7 I shit you not.) is just sickening. I guess it explains the steady 2/30 players we get daily.

I'd try things like your Terraria roleplay or ProjectZomboid or somthing like that, but you know, I hate going outside my comfort zone and all that jazz. Over the years it saddens me to see Garrysmod SeriousRP deteriorate, but I 'spose that's the way its gotta be unless there's some miracle.

Don't you wish you had a time machine or somthing?  :-\
