Title: Paradox Interactive's Grand Strategy Multiplayer Thread - We need players!
Post by: jaik on 24-11-2012
I decided to see how many people in HGN are actually interested in (trying) multiplayer grand strategy, so here we are. I'll start with the first Paradox game I played, which made me addicted to its products: Victoria II
Victoria II
Quote
Carefully guide your nation from the era of absolute monarchies in the early 19th century, through expansion and colonization, to finally become a truly great power by the dawn of the 20th century.
Victoria II is a grand strategy game played during the colonial era of the 19th century, where the player takes control of a country, guiding it through industrialisation, political reforms, military conquest, and colonization.
Experience an in-depth political simulation where every action you take will have various consequences all over the world. The population will react to your decisions based on their political awareness, social class, as well as their willingness to accept or revolt against their government.
Key features:
Deep engrossing political simulation with dozens of different governments.

  • Detailed economy with over fifty different types of goods and various production factories.
  • Over 200 different countries can be played, during the era stretching from 1835 to the onset of WWII.
  • Advanced Technological system with thousands of inventions to discover.
  • Improved graphics and interface, as well as multiplayer support.
  • A streamlined interface makes the game easily accessible.
  • Automation of various tasks including, trade and population promotion.
  • Advanced spheres of influences system, where the great powers battle over the control of the world.
  • Cottage production simulating pre-industrial economies.
  • Gunboat Diplomacy, no need for negotiating as a fleet outside a port may be a more persuasive argument.
  • Historical and Dynamic missions guiding your country through the history.
    [/l][/l][/l][/l][/l][/l]
Population
The reason why this game is awesome is its complicated system of population management, this includes but is not limited to: nationality, religion, political issues, political ideology, militancy, consciousness, needs, income, employment and migration. the system is actually much more complicated than it first seems, but you have to play the game for a while to understand it.

Economy
Another feature that truly deserves credit is the economy. I don't think any game has ever simulated global trade like this. Goods are not asspulled and everything has a quantity with a dynamic index. Dominating(or generally winning in this game) the market isn't about how many provinces you control, so even if you're holding 99% of the entire world, you can still lose to a single province that has the proper industrial conditions for producing the specific good. These conditions can be achieved if you're able to industrialise accordingly(yes, there are ways of fucking it up and ruining your economy for a good while).

Politics
Now the final reason why do I keep coming back to this game is its endless possibilities of creating or forming a state/country under different conditions. The game proceeds quite randomly and one time you can get a completely historically plausible playthrough(which almost never happens mind you), or the second time you play, you might see that Occitania has gobbled up France completely, or that the Confederate States won the civil war. These are just examples of what happened to me, but it has an infinite amount of outcomes.

Mods
Considering that mods are what actually make Victoria II good, you will have to get the latest version of APD(A Pop Divided / Population Demand Mod).

Multiplayer - Post here if you want to play with us
Currently it's only me and Kieck playing Vicky2 in MP(currently Bavaria -> South German Federation -> Germany and Galicia-Lodomeria -> Poland -> Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth respectively) and we're looking for more people to play with. We're also looking for somebody with a decent internet speed to be a hoster. If anybody is interested just tell me and I'll teach you how to set it up.

Where to get this game?

If you don't have any money for this just PM me or talk to me on Steam.

Other Paradox games worthy of attention are EU3 and HoI III, but I won't go too deep here because both of us prefer Vic2 for its unique sandbox qualities, while EU3 is too static for my likings and HoI is a Grand Strategy completely dedicated to simulating WW2.

Screenshots
My screenshots in Vic2, usually I made them in the endgame, hence why the fuckery. Mass conquest is very difficult without cheats:Goofed with the French in one of my oldest games

Ok now that Kieck learned how to play HoI3, we're playing that as well. If you like/or are interested in trying out a good and immersive WW2 grand strategy then you're free to contact me about joining us.
We're playing on HoI 3 1.4 + Semper Fi + For The Motherland + The Finest Hour
Some screenies will follow soon.

Currently fighting Italy, Hungary and Russia. We'll nerf them until they'll have nothing to influence our protectorates with. Yellow thing is Bohemia-Moravia aka Czechs and below it is Austria, both are my vassals.

So uh, anyone will try to play with us? It's fun when you learn to play this game, especially when you try to play with a shitty country (such as Greece) to make it into an empire (Greece into Byzantium for example) or nerfing the Great Powers so hard that they would become Civilized Nations (for example liberating every country Austria had conquered).

This is very unappealing. I'd rather play Civ 5.

Civ V doesn't have the in-depth gameplay of Victoria 2 though. You can't simulate the various social events which happen in Victoria 2 (Spring of the Nations in the Russian Empire, anyone?), there's virtually no economy simulation in Civ V. Although comparing these two games is pointless, they might both be grand strategies, but they're too different to compare.
On the screenshots Jake had published, we had only presented a small portion of things you can do in Victoria 2, there are many more things you can do to either feed your inner imperialist by conquering whole Africa or, as I had said before, guide a little country to glory.

Ok good for you, this thread is about Paradox games so don't derail the topic.

My point was Victoria 2 is extremely slow paced. Even more so than Civ.

Let's just play Crusader Kings 2.

You can torrent any Paradox game legally because they don't trademark their games.

I've tried CK2 but couldn't keep playing it. Grand Strategy in Middle Ages isn't my thing, although some games that are set in that time like M&B are awesome. Middle Ages just lacks that feel of dynamic political environment.
