The Remnant
A group of fanatical knowledge seekers willing to do anything to obtain it

"Knowledge is power"

These are the descendants of a religious group still unknown. Their goal is to collect as much pre-war knowledge as possible, and master it. They worship the deity "The Knowing One" who they believe commands and guides them. They believe that "The Knowing One" caused "The Rebirth" (great War) to punish humankind for not cherishing knowledge. They refer to before the war as "The Before Time" and are not particularly fond of it. They do their best to collect books and holotapes, which sometimes puts them at odds with the Brotherhood of Steel, fortunately the Bluegrass chapter is more civil.

Relations
They are not overly friendly to wasters, they refer to them as "Burdened Ones" believing that they are burdened by ignorance, and as a result they don't trust wasters, ignorance can lead to savagery, but they are happy to educate wasters on their faith. They only let wasters join if they perform a test of faith, which is decided by the head priest of that chapter. Speakers can often be found preaching the word of "The Knowing One" to wasters, telling them to "cast off their burdens of ignorance" trying to convert them "the light of The Knowing One" the Speakers often recite "lessons of knowledge" which are their sermons. The Remnant is slightly friendly toward the Brotherhood of Steel, believing that they are like The Remnant, only more obsessed with technology than knowledge. The Remnant despise slavers and bandits alike calling them the "crushed" and  "broken ones" believing that slavers souls have been crushed by their burdens of ignorance, and raiders minds have been broken by it. They believe that , mutants are "the punished" believing that "The knowing One" has punished them for either the rejection, or destruction of knowledge, they are avoided.
Hierarchy
High Speaker- The leader of The Remnant, he speaks the will of "The Knowing One"
Viziers- They oversee the three different branches of The Remnant (defenders, speakers, listeners)
Shields, Head Speakers, Overseers- govern the defenders, speakers, and listeners in different chapters
Defenders, Speakers- protectors, and voices of The Remnant
Observers, whisperers- trainees for the protectors, and the speakers
Listeners- people under the protection of The Remnant

Duties & Info
Defenders
Defenders protect The Remnant from attacks from "The Broken Ones", "The Crushed Ones", "The Punished", or anything else that threatens The Remnant. They are fiercely loyal and will fight to the death for their beliefs, believing that "The Knowing One" will reward them in the "World After", which is what they call the afterlife. They maintain strict discipline, and obedience. They also act as peace keepers for the listeners. They also split the task of recovering knowledge with the speakers but it is mostly their job.

Speakers
Speakers spread the word of The Remnant. They convert, establish places for "Lessons of Knowledge", and they preach to the listeners. Speakers study the sacred texts of "The Knowing One" and interpret them, this gives a slight variability between the speakers' preachings. The speakers follow a strict code of beliefs, based on the texts of "The Knowing One". Unlike priests in "The Before Time" speakers are allowed to have children, in fact most speakers are part of legacies spanning generations. Women are rarely speakers, they have to show a strong devotion to "The Knowing One" then they have to be deemed fit by the High Speaker himself, if they are not they can become observers, and eventually defenders, or they can live life as a listener.
Listeners
Listeners have duties despite not being an official part of The Remnant, they are responsible for growing crops, and tending to the animals, they also do other things, such as maintenance. They are allowed to leave the protection of The Remnant, but most never do.
Responsibilities of the different Ranks
Note: Listeners are not included in this list, as they are not officially part of The Remnant.
Whisperers- Whisperers learn the ways of the speakers.
Observers- Observers learn the ways of the Defenders.
Speakers- Preach to "The Burdened Ones" and instruct whisperers.
Defenders- Protect the Remnant, keep peace for the listeners, and instruct observers.
Head Speakers- Watch over the Speakers, determine tests of faith, and preaches to the Listeners.
Shields- Watch over the Defenders, supervises knowledge recovery.
Overseers- Create laws and supervise the listeners
Vizier of Speakers- Supervise Head Speakers, and review candidates for Head Listeners, replaces High Speaker when he dies.
Vizier of Defenders- Supervises Shields, reviews candidates for Shields.
Vizier of Listeners- Supervises Overseers, reviews candidates for Overseers, which are selected from the Speakers.
High Speaker- Speaks the will of "The Knowing One", leader of The Remnant, Appoints new viziers when they die, reviews women and deems whether or not they are fit to be a Speaker.

The Knowing One
The Knowing one is the basis of The Remnant, he is the guiding hand of their actions. They believe The Knowing one is the guardian of all knowledge, and from where all knowledge originates. However this does not mean in a nutshell that The Knowing One is knowledge, knowledge is simply The Knowing One's gift to the world. When man was but a beast, The Knowing One descended to the Earth and gave man the gift of knowledge in the form of higher level thinking, so man might learn and think for themselves. So it was that man rose from the beasts and created a magnificent society. Every once in a while The Knowing One would come to Earth and breath inspiration and knowledge into the ear of man. One day The Knowing One descended to Earth, and was outraged to see the utter disregard for knowledge, how mankind had disregarded the gifts given to them so long ago. However The Knowing One saw one group still faithful to the pursuit of knowledge, and decided to spare them, this was to be The Remnant. The Knowing one sent "The Rebirth" wiping out most of mankind, The Remnant were shielded, and The Knowing One sent them out into the world to regain the gifts given to man, and cherish them while educating any person willing to shed their burdens of ignorance and bask in the gifts of The Knowing One.
Note: This is taken from the religious texts of The Remnant.

The High Speaker
The High Speaker is the leader of The Remnant, this means he has many duties and responsibilities. First and foremost he is the guiding voice of The Remnant. He is in complete control, his will is followed without question. Other than that he is responsible for the review of all female candidates for speakers. The reviews are very thorough, he reviews her faith, devotion, loyalty, and other factors; women have to be on the verge of zealotry to become a speaker. These are but two of his responsibilities. He also consults regularly with his Viziers. He is also personally responsible for the selection and preparation of the Viziers. One of his most important duties is communicating with The Knowing One, this is believed to be achieved in many ways, such as: meditation, prayer, and most extremely: chem use, the chems can cause hallucinations, which are interpreted as visions from The Knowing One. An equally as important duty is reviewing all knowledge collected by The Remnant. His final and most important duty is communicating the word of The Knowing One to the rest of the church, this means that he interprets his communication with The Knowing One, the sacred texts, and previously reviewed knowledge. Then he communicates to the Viziers what he thinks it means, the idea is then refined before being handed down to the rest of The Remnant.

This sounds like an amazing ripoff of the BoS.

Tom

BoS is interested in technology, not knowledge, nor does BoS worship "The Technological one"

If anything its a rip off of that one faction in FO that was real into books and such.

Quote from: Fallout WikiReavers are a cult of humans dedicated to the worship of technology. Unlike the Brotherhood of Steel, Reavers feel technology has an important religious significance.
It's a mix between Reavers (technology cult) and Children of the Apocalypse (dedicated to get the knowledge of the Pre-War world).

The BoS is, and I quote from their description "Protectors of the Wasteland" The Remnant don't give a damn about wasters, either they join and become Listeners or they don't and leave them alone.
QuoteThe Followers' goal is to bring the torch of knowledge to the wastes and express support for the freeflow of information, technology and supplies equally among all the peoples of the wasteland.
This is taken from the fallout wiki about Followers of the Apocalypse. The Remnant are more of a join and gain "knowledge" or don't and remain an ignorant waster, plus they kind of take and hoard knowledge, they don't really share it with wasters, and they are in a militarized church city-state type format. And unlike Reavers, The Remnant are a church, not a cult, they are organized and unlike tech to reavers, to The Remnant, knowledge is not the basis of their religion, its what they crave, what they want, like their motto "Knowledge is Power" while they follow "The Knowing One" not knowledge itself, see above. Besides this is a work in progress.
Also I had never even heard of the Reavers until now.

I actually don't use the Major Factions board, I hop up to the Brotherhood of Steel right away.

And what, it's on their description, I think it needs a change.

The point is that The Remnant don't give a damn about protecting the wasteland, or reestablishing a functioning government, the Brotherhood cares about at least one of these.

Ummm no. Brotherhood aren't protectors of the Wasteland. Only in DC they are but that hasn't happened yet in our timeline. The BoS are neutral but try to keep to themselves mostly.

Protecting the Wasteland - Washington Brotherhood of Steel (iirc the mission is sent somewhere in 2240-2260).
Re-establishing functioning government - NCR (creating itself OR getting control over... in which state does FO2 take place ?).

The brotherhood believes the wastelanders are meant to die and that the Brotherhood will take their place as a civilized, intelligent society..

They're protecting the wasteland in the sense that you protect your home your property or the cardboard box you live in.

Then that means the The Remnant are even less like the Brotherhood of Steel than I thought. My point = Proven.

I've managed to secure(ish) the town bunk house (previously Tim's Diner) for The Remnant, with Blake's OK of course. this is still a work in progress, but I'm putting the pieces into place. Now all I need is members. Caps don't hurt either.

Das_Uberman

Sweet! With Blake's new settlement upgrades, I can create a true base for The Remnant! I'll post more once it's established.

*Updated faction relations

Post in this thread if you are interested in joining. (This group will not conflict with other factions)

Das_Uberman

The Remnant will not take any official sides in the current faction war, however, we are leaning towards the Boones, more updates in the future.

Das_Uberman

I've gotten the go ahead to keep the Remnant post-wipe, time for a fresh start, when the overhaul happens that is, until then, it'll pretty much be the same.
